We’ve all seen them before. Crazy claims that basically tell us that by simply taking a pill we can reverse years worth of poor choices in a day or two…
It’s almost insulting in some ways because for those of us that really do try everything to make better choices, it almost discounts our efforts when someone comes along and tells you to take a “magic pill.’
I want to share with you the three reasons that most cleanses don’t work and what you can do to get around those and still give yourself an effective detox, the RIGHT way, without the fluff.
Problem Number 1: They focus too much on Fruit!
Fruit is amazing stuff. It truly is nature’s form of candy in a way, but before we can really use fruit in a cleanse, we need to understand how it is metabolized differently from other sugars, otherwise you can end up putting on more fat than you lose!
You see, fruit is made up of something called fructose, and that fructose is not metabolized the same way that normal carbohydrates are.
We store carbohydrates in our muscles and in our liver. This means that when we eat the right carbs, they’re stored in massive storage tanks in our muscles for later use. But fruit does not act this way… Nope, fruit can ONLY be stored in the liver, and NOT in the muscles, which means the storage tank is MUCH smaller.
When you have a smaller storage tank for carbohydrates, it is easy to overfill it and let those carbohydrates go straight into storage.... This is how cleanses can cause fat gain!
Fructose is also absorbed differently in the body, not triggering the same sort of insulin response as traditional carbohydrates.
This is all fine, except most cleanses focus on using fruit simply because it is low calorie and “feels” fresh, when in reality, if it isn’t utilized for fuel close to immediately, it can be stored as fat and even increase your blood sugar (which defeats the purpose of a cleanse).
If you’re focusing on doing any kind of cleanse protocol, you want one that uses a whole-food balance of nutrients and not just one or two foods that make you feel good temporarily. You want a Cleanse Protocol that allows you to be in balance.
Problem Number 2: They Lack Protein
Most cleanses help you feel better temporarily because they reduce the temporary bloat that can be caused immediately after ingesting some protein, but in REALITY, a lot of times, protein is easier to break down than many raw veggies and fruits.
The big thing that we have to look at is the effect of protein and muscle on the metabolism. Why would you want to do a cleanse that causes you to lose muscle?
You want a cleanse that allows you to maintain muscle because what muscle you do have is what is responsible for your fast metabolism to begin with!
By eating protein, you trigger an enzymatic response that helps you boost your metabolism, which is what you need when you’re trying to cleanse.
Faster metabolism = the faster your body is processing nutrients (good and bad)
Imagine going on a cleanse, or trying to reboot your body but your metabolism comes to a screeching halt in the process… It’s like you just shut your body down instead of encouraged it to speed up.

Well that’s great, except they’re not targeting what REALLY makes a cleanse a CLEANSE… and that is helping the body to become purer and more receptive to what you’re feeding it.
True Fact About Cleanses and Your Metabolism!
If you can get your body to absorb more of what is actually needed, then you can encourage your metabolism to work harder, and that, in turn, helps you lose weight but also combat ailments.
The biggest issue that I have seen with cleanses is that they don’t target the actual root of the issue. They don’t target inflammatory markers in the body, and that is one of the most important components here.
Imagine this: You have inflammation occurring in your body. Specifically in your digestive tract, and that is making it so that you are having a hard time absorbing nutrients. This, in turn makes it so that your body’s metabolism slows down due to that famed rise in cortisol due to lack of nutrients and food.
